The story unfolds through two alternating perspectives:
  • Aomame’s World: Aomame is a professional fitness instructor who leads a double life as an assassin targeting men who have committed acts of domestic violence. While stuck in traffic, she follows a taxi driver’s suggestion to take an emergency stairway off a highway. Upon exiting, she realizes she has entered an alternate version of 1984, which she names "1Q84" (where "Q" stands for "Question Mark"). She notices subtle differences, most notably the appearance of a second, smaller green moon in the sky. She is soon tasked by a wealthy dowager to assassinate the "Leader" of a powerful religious cult called Sakigaki.
  • Tengo’s World: Tengo is a math teacher and aspiring novelist. His editor, Komatsu, convinces him to ghostwrite (rewrite) a strange but captivating novella titled "Air Chrysalis," originally written by a mysterious 17-year-old girl named Fuka-Eri. As Tengo works on the project, he discovers that the "fictional" elements of the book—such as the "Little People" who weave cocoons out of thin air—are actually based on Fuka-Eri’s real experiences within the Sakigaki cult.
