Every family has its secrets and Sandy's is no different. At his uncle's funeral in the small Cypriot village of Bamyaköy, Sandy discovers that he has a half-sister, Defne, and that his long dead and idolised Turkish Cypriot father, Zeki Aziz, had cheated on his mother months before he was born. No longer an only child, Sandy is desperate to meet Defne, but his efforts are thwarted by her over-protective mother.

Back in London, Sandy continues his search for Defne. With the onset of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Sandy's priorities change. He sets aside his ethical beliefs to go work for his father's childhood friend Aydin, a savvy businessman with ruthless methods and secrets of his own. The two men form a close bond and, under Aydin's watchful eye, Sandy forges a new life acquiring wealth and self-confidence, whilst losing his own moral compass.

With Aydin's help, Sandy finally gets to meet his sister. There is an instant chemistry between the siblings and the pair decide to follow Aydin and relocate to North Cyprus in search of an idyllic life in their father's village of Bamyaköy. Yet Defne and Sandy are ill-prepared for the darkness that has enveloped the island and its people. As an unthinkable romance unfolds, old wounds come to the fore and the siblings are forced to choose between fight or flight with devastating consequences.
